I don’t usually pick something and stick to it, but last week I began thinking about a new year’s resolution. What personal goal could I work on in 2013? I came up with a list of things… I could be a better mother, exercise more, eat healthier, spent more time in prayer… the list went on! Then it hit me! All of the these go back to just one thing: Discipline. It’s right there in my first sentence – “I don’t usually pick something and stick to it!”
I was thinking on this and trying to figure out how you make discipline a new year’s resolution when I came across One Word 365 on Facebook via A Deeper Story. One Word 365 is a campaign that encourages choosing just one word to focus on for the entire year, instead of a list of goals you won’t even be able to remember in a few weeks. One word that sums up who you want to be or how you want to live. It’s exactly what I needed to make sense of the word that I feel like God has already given me.
Here’s an excerpt from the One Word 365 website:
Because that’s easy to remember all 365 days of the year.
Not as easy is the choice to live it out. To let it shape your year. To allow it to shape you. But if you’ll let it, your One Word will become the filter through which you see and live your life. It will steer your decisions and guide your steps.
The Ugly Truth
I’m tired of feeling like a failure and making myself feel guilty for the things that don’t get done. I know that I can’t be perfect, but the truth is that some of the reason I feel so bad is because I know I’m not even trying. I’m just doing whatever I want to do whenever I want to do it. That’s a selfish life and I’m tired of living it.
I’m going to prayerfully and intentionally work on being more disciplined. I don’t really know what that looks like right now, but I do know that I am making the conscious decision to make a change that is only possible by God’s grace. I’ll update you guys periodically on how my pursuit of discipline is going.
What New Year’s resolution did you make this year? Be sure to leave me a comment if you are doing One Word 365 also!
